DN. SHANT KAZANJIAN CONDUCTS BIBLE STUDY
AT ST. SARKIS CHURCH IN DOUGLASTON

After the evening service of the Great (Holy) Tuesday, at the invitation of Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, pastor of St. Sarkis Church in Douglaston, New York, Dn. Shant Kazanjian conducted a Bible study for the young adult group. Dn. Shant focused on the scriptural readings of the Armenian Church for Great Monday. (For Holy Week Bible readings, click here.)
“The Monday readings present an overarching drama of the Bible,” said Dn. Shant, “the climactic scene in the final act being the betrayal, the suffering, the crucifixion, the death and the resurrection of the promised messiah, Jesus the Christ, who gave his life as a ‘ransom for many’” (Matthew 20:28). In this drama, however, we are not mere spectators, emphasized Dn. Shant; we have a role to play—we are commanded to follow the way of Jesus: “But Jesus called them [the disciples] to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many’” (Matthew 20:24-28)

“Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. Your people shall all be righteous, they shall possess the land for ever, the shoot of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified. The least one shall become a clan, and the smallest one a mighty nation; I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it.

VIGEN GUROIAN ON PUBLIC RADIO
Noted theologian Vigen Guroian will be featured on public radio’s Speaking of Faith series. Public radio’s web page describes the program like this: Honing the Senses: Life, Gardening, and an Orthodox Easter: Theologian Vigen Guroian experiences Easter as “a call to our senses.” We’ll explore his Eastern Orthodox sensibility that is at once more mystical and more earthy than the Christianity dominant in Western culture. And at this time of year and beyond, Vigen Guroian does real theology in his garden as richly as in church.
The program airs in the New York area on WNYC-AM (820) this Saturday at 3 pm and Sunday at 10 pm. To check your listening area click here.

PRAISING EGERIA
We have detailed information about the celebration of Holy Week in Jerusalem in the early church, thanks to a Spanish nun named Egeria who made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem during Holy Week in the late fourth century and kept a detailed journal. Egeria’s journal provides us with important information regarding the early church. For example, she categorizes the chants into hymns, psalms, and antiphons, showing that certain parts of the church liturgy were already existent in the fourth century. Her accounts also reveal the hierarchy within the church, and provide information about the daily services, Sunday services, lenten season in Jerusalem, rules of fasting, etc.

LAST AMERICAN VETERAN OF WORLD WAR I
The news this week about the death of the last American veteran of World War I, age 105, reminded us that tomorrow is the 90th anniversary of the United States’ entry into the war. After three years of neutrality, the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917.
