YOUR
CHURCH. YOUR FUTURE. ENGAGE:
A GATHERING WITH ARAM VEHAPAR
His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia will be
in the United States in early December. He will deliver the keynote address
at a conference at the University of Notre Dame. On this occasion, His
Holiness requested a gathering of young Armenians from across the United
States and Canada to gather in Michigan and engage in a dialogue with
him, and have the opportunity to learn more about the Armenian Church.
The dates of the weekend gathering are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday December
1, 2 and 3. The Midwest was selected as the site of the event because
of its central location accessible to both the East and West coasts of
the United States and Canada.
The theme of the event is “Your Church. Your Future. Engage.”
Organizers of the event, which is being sponsored by the three Prelacies
of North America, are forming a roster of events that will be challenging
and engrossing. Visit the Eastern Prelacy’s web site for up-to-date
information.

ARCHBISHOP
OSHAGAN ATTENDS RETIREMENT GALA
FOR JUDGE SARKIS TESHOIAN
Archbishop Oshagan attended a retirement celebration for The Honorable
Judge Sarkis Teshoian, in Worcester, Massachusetts, last Thursday, September
28. Judge Teshoian, a highly respected jurist and scholar, is a past chairman
of the Eastern Prelacy’s Executive Council, as well as a delegate
to the World Assembly of the Catholicosate of Cilicia. Judge Teshoian
recently retired and his wife, Ardemis, managed to plan a surprise retirement
gala that brought together more than a hundred colleagues and friends.
Archbishop Oshagan praised the Judge who has served the Armenian church
and nation, and the United States of America with great dedication. The
Prelate talked about the environment of the Judge’s formative years
and the influence of his parents as major components of the integrity
and honesty that have been the hallmark of his life. The Prelate presented
a gift of a beautiful incense burner to the couple as a reminder of their
sweet fragrance in this world.

by His Holiness Aram I. The event was under the auspices of His Eminence
Archbishop Oshagan. The Faithful of the metro area communities of New
York City, New Jersey, Douglaston, and Philadelphia gathered in impressive
numbers to congratulate Bishop Anoushavan and express heartfelt good wishes
for his continued inspiring ministry.

HOLY PRINCES
SAHAK AND HAMAZASP
REMEMBERED TODAY
Today, Thursday, October 5, the Armenian Church commemorates the lives
of two holy princes, Sahak and Hamazasp. The two princes lived during
the reign of Emperor Leo and Archbishop Flavian of Constantinople and
during the pontificate of Catholicos Nerses, at a time of Arab rule in
Armenia. The governorship had been given to Hamazasp, who was from the
Ardzrouni dynasty. He had two brothers, Sahag and Merhoushan. All three
were considered brave men and dedicated Christians. The princes were given
a choice of forsaking their faith in Christ or being tortured to death.
Merhoushan renounced Christ and was given authority to rule over the province
of Vasbouragan. Sahak and Hamazasp remained true. Both were martyred.
72 HOLY DISCIPLES
OF CHRIST
COMMEMORATED THIS SATURDAY
This Saturday, October 7, the Armenian Church commemorates the 72 holy
disciples of Christ. The reference comes from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter
10, Verse 1. The tradition of the church confirms that the 72 (some versions
of the Gospel say 70) disciples remained true disciples whose labors carried
the message of the Lord throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. All of
the saints are remembered individually in the calendar of the church,
but this day is set aside to remember them collectively. The number 70
is also considered to be a reference to Genesis, which speaks of 70 nations
of the world.
MONDAY IS
COLUMBUS DAY
This Monday, October 9, is Columbus Day, a holiday celebrated in many
countries in the Americas, commemorating the date of Christopher Columbus’s
arrival in the New World in 1492. A sailor on board the Pinta
sighted land early in the morning of October 12, 1492, and a new era of
European exploration and expansion began. The next day, the ninety crew
members of Columbus’s three-ship fleet (Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria)
went on land to the Bahamian island of Guanahani, ending a voyage that
began ten weeks earlier from Palos, Spain.
President
Franklin Roosevelt first proclaimed October 12 a national holiday in 1937.
Since 1971—during that era when dates of holidays were moved (in
the U.S.) to create long weekends—Columbus Day has been commemorated
on the second Monday in October, which is also Thanksgiving Day in Canada.
“At two hours after midnight
appeared the land, at a distance of 2 leagues. They handed all sails and
set the treo, which is the mainsail without bonnets, and lay-to waiting
for daylight Friday, when they arrived at an island of the Bahamas that
was called in the Indians’ tongue Guanahani.”
From Journal of the First Voyage, October 12, 1492
SHINE ON HARVEST
MOON
Tomorrow, October 6, the full Harvest Moon of 2006 rises. The full moon
closest to the autumnal equinox is called the Harvest Moon. At this time
of the year, the moon rises at about the same time each night, just after
sunset, giving farmers extra hours of light to bring in the harvest, hence
the name “Harvest Moon.” |
