EPISCOPAL CONSECRATION OF BISHOP ANOUSHAVAN
WILL BE CELEBRATED ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 1

Archbishop Oshagan is pleased to announce that the recent Episcopal Consecration of Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General of the Prelacy, will be celebrated on Sunday, October 1st. His Grace will officiate at the Divine Liturgy that day at St. Sarkis Church, Douglaston, New York—a parish he served as pastor for more than a decade. In the afternoon a Celebratory Banquet will take part in the Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows, New York, beginning at 3 pm. Professor Hratch Zadoian, Vice-President Emeritus of Queens College, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies, with the Keynote Address delivered by Rev. Fr. Nerses Manoogian, pastor of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church, Philadelphia, and a classmate of Bishop Anoushavan at the Theological Seminary at Antelias.

“This will be an opportunity for many of our Faithful who could not attend the consecration ceremony in Antelias to congratulate and honor Bishop Anoushavan,” said Archbishop Oshagan. In addition to his duties as Vicar of the Prelacy, Bishop Anoushavan was recently appointed Ecumenical Officer in the United States for the Catholicosate of Cilicia, by His Holiness Catholicos Aram I.

Since his ordination, Hayr Daniel has been serving at the Prelacy office in New York City on many Christian education projects. Next month he will begin his ministry at St. Hagop Church in Racine, Wisconsin.

ARAM I RECEIVES PAPAL LEGATE
Catholicos Aram I welcomed His Eminence Roger Cardinal Etchegaray, a special legate of the Pope, in a visit this week to the Catholicosate in Antelias, Lebanon. His Holiness expressed his deep appreciation for the continuous support of the Vatican to Lebanon. “Lebanon was very close to the heart of the late Pope John Paul II, who considered Lebanon to be a living message of coexistence, and Pope Benedictus XVI has the same feelings and affection towards Lebanon,” said the Cardinal. The Cardinal said that the “unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon cannot be compromised,” and assured His Holiness that the people of Lebanon will always remain in the prayers and the pontifical ministry of the Pope.

THOUSANDS OF FAITHFUL PARTICIPATE IN FEAST OF ASSUMPTION
AND THE BLESSING OF GRAPES IN BIKFAYA, LEBANON

In spite of the current difficulties in Lebanon, thousands of Armenian pilgrims attended the Feast of the Assumption and the Blessing of Grapes ceremony in Bikfaya, Lebanon, last weekend. In his message, His Holiness Aram I reminded the pilgrims that faith should become the basis of the life of any person who claims to be Christian. “Faith is at the heart of the Gospel. Being Christian means living a faith-driven life. Being Christian means translating faith into a quality of life marked by love, compassion, engagement and service. Faith also implies faithfulness to all values and principles that constitute the essence and the purpose of Christianity.”

His Holiness took this opportunity to address the current situation in Lebanon and the importance of compassion. “As Christians each of us must become a Good Samaritan. The real Christian is the one who articulates his or her Christianness by identifying himself or herself with the suffering people.” The Catholicos appealed to the Armenian community in Lebanon to help those refugees who have been forced to leave their homes in South Lebanon. “We must not forget that the Lebanese people—Christians and Moslems—accepted us in this country after the Armenian Genocide, and they shared their bread with us. This is the time that we reciprocate by tangibly expressing the same compassion towards our Lebanese sisters and brothers.”

PHOTOJOURNALIST ALEXANDRA AVAKIAN IN TIME MAGAZINE

In the July 31st issue of Time Magazine, photographs taken by the well-known and respected Armenian American photojournalist, Alexandra Avakian, were featured with the story “Inside Hizballah.” Time wrote: “Granted unprecedented access to the militant group, photographer Alexandra Avakian captured these intimate portraits of the men, women and children caught up in the struggle with Israel.”

The photographs—which are truly amazing—were taken during three trips to Lebanon. Her work has appeared in National Geographic (including a story on Armenia), Time, Life, Newsweek, New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Magazine, as well as many publications in Europe.

SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNA
Next Tuesday, August 22, the Armenian Church commemorates the lives of Saints Joachim and Anna, parents of Mary, mother of Christ. According to tradition, Joachim and Anna were childless through years of marriage and were reproached for their barrenness. Joachim fasted forty days in the desert and both prayed to God for a child, placing their trust in His will, whatever it be. An angel appeared to each of them, telling them they would be the parents of a child. That child was Mary, mother of Jesus.

REMEMBER…
The cease-fire in Lebanon was welcome news. But, remember that many people in Lebanon are in need of our help. The Prelacy is accepting donations, which will be transferred to the Catholicosate to help the thousands of refugees who have fled the south into other areas of Lebanon. Checks should be payable to the “Armenian Prelacy’ and sent to 138 E. 39th Street, New York, NY 10016.
