93rd Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
New York City Hall Chambers
Friday, April 25, 2008
Almighty
God, we have gathered here tonight in this greatest of cities,
to commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
perpetrated by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. We do so in the
presence of the leadership of this great metropolis, ever
mindful of your words, always choosing your path—the
path toward life and light.
We honor
the memory of our one and a half million martyrs whose faith
in you transcended their earthly life. We gain strength from
the survivors whose numbers dwindle each year. Nevertheless,
they will continue to reinforce our resolve, determination
and hope beyond the grave. We live to perpetuate their hope
and dreams, their struggle and spirit. In honoring them, we
honor all victims of tyranny everywhere.
Bless
our leaders, those who are with us tonight and those who are
not. Guide them so that they may fulfill their appointed tasks
for the security and welfare of the people of New York City.
Guide them down the path of justice and righteousness.
Bring
your favor and guidance on the work of the Armenian National
Committee of America, in their dedicated pursuit of truth
and service to your creatures.
Our faith
in you remains strong and we offer our eternal thanks for
your deliverance out of the valley of death and into this
land of freedom and liberty. We are strengthened with the
hope of your words and teachings that tell us that truth abides
and remains strong forever.
The wounds
of the 20th century’s first genocide continue to fester
and deepen because of the failure of our own leaders in Washington
to properly recognize the Armenian Genocide. The denial of
genocide encourages more genocide, as we have seen time and
again since 1915.
Almighty
God, in this season of spring when the earth blossoms forth,
renewing again the promise of life throughout nature and the
creatures of the world that you have created, we are mindful
that there is still injustice and cruelty and the denial of
truth. We know that you are the only one who has the power
to replace darkness with light, conquer lies with truth, bring
hope instead of despair, inspire love instead of hate, give
courage instead of fear, and spread kindness instead of cruelty.
“In your hand are power and might; and it is in your
hand to make great and to give strength to all.”*
Grant
your children wisdom, compassion, and love so that they may
live in freedom and righteousness, and enjoy the blessings
of your fatherly love. We give thanks to you and praise your
glorious name.
In the
name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…….
